Where can I get...?
If you would like to find custom content used in any of my The Sims 2 stories, you'll find many of my favorite, and most often used custom content creators listed under Custom Content Sites above or you can visit the WCIF topic at Live Journal.
As for anything I use with The Sims 3, it's available through the base game, EP's, SP's and Sims 3 Store content. I do not use Custom Content or Hacks in the telling of my TS3 stories.

You know I like seeing them as well. It gives you a much better idea of how they work and look. And you can get so creative with the pose shots!
One of the other things I've tried is to put them where and how they should go. Such as using the skateboard or the sword where needed. I have to say, though, sometimes I look at those couple shots and just have to play with them trial and error. But the good thing is, when I'm done playing with them in the time I set aside, putting the updates goes faster and with less frustration. :D
Yes, you can get creative, there are many ways to use a pose.
